Earn $500 for Books from the Georgia State Bookstore

Choose from one of the categories below and create your own original multimedia submission that answers the question:

“What role does popular culture play in our view of current events?”


Include a short caption (150 word max) with your photograph or drawn picture explaining why you chose the photo and how it answers the above question.

Video, Song or Podcast

Recordings must be no more than 2 minutes. Lyrics and scripts must be original. If including images or stock footage in a video it must be original or under creative commons copyright, and you must give credit to the owner.

Essay, Story or Poem

Writing must fit on one side of an 8.5" x 11" sheet of paper.

Two first-place winners will receive the following:

    1. A $500 Scholarship to buy books and supplies from the Georgia State Bookstore for the Spring '16 semester
    2. Their Multimedia Submission Displayed Online on Georgia State's First-Year Programs website and social media sites
    3. Recognition at a First Year Book event in early November
    4. Their Multimedia Submission Published in the 2017 edition of The Guide to First-Year Writing used in English 1101 and 1102 classes

In her book Enrique's Journey, Sonia Nazario, mentions the view of America that many immigrants have due to what is portrayed by the media.

For this competition, we would like you to explore the role that popular culture plays in our view of current events.  Your answer should be based on a theme found in Enrique's Journey.

Are you a creative, first-year student at Georgia State?  Do you like drawing, writing, or taking photographs?  If so, you have the opportunity to earn one of two $500 scholarships to buy books from the Georgia State Bookstore!

All you have to do is submit an original photo, video, drawing, essay, story, etc. that answers this question:
