Information for Potential SI Leaders

Supplemental Instruction is an academic assistance program aimed to help students enrolled in traditionally difficult courses. SI Leaders are students that have previously done well in the course and act as model students by attending all class lectures. Outside of class, the SI Leader facilitates SI sessions, which are weekly, informal peer-to-peer study sessions that cover course content and help students develop effective study strategies.

  • Provide assistance to students enrolled in an academically challenging courses
  • Plan and facilitate out-of-class study sessions three times a week throughout the semester
  • Attend all course lectures
  • Attend all SI leader trainings and meetings, and complete tasks throughout the semester to enhance the SI Leader experience and SI program for students
  • Assist in the collection and reporting of evaluative data regarding the selected course

SI Leaders are trained in proactive learning and study strategies as well as facilitation skills. SI Leaders are facilitators who assists students to integrate course content and learning strategies.

To become an SI Leader, you should have the following qualifications:

  • Be an undergraduate student enrolled in at least half-time credit hours at Georgia State University
  • Maintain an overall GPA of a 3.0 or higher
  • Have completed the SI course with an A- or better
  • Possess excellent interpersonal communication skills
  • Maintain a working knowledge of campus resources for academic success
  • Provide a completed Faculty Recommendation form;  a recommendation from a faculty member within the discipline of the course is preferred
  • An academic level of sophomore, junior, or senior standing is preferred


We are now accepting SI Leader Applications for the Summer and Fall semesters of 2017. We are looking to fill open positions in various courses, so please be sure to review our SI Schedule to see which positions you may be eligible for. If there is a course that you would like to apply for please be sure to download the application or stop by our office in SPARKS Hall 249 to pick one up. Below are the application deadlines along with the dates and times of the information sessions that are coming up. Please note that all applicants are required to attend at least one information session to continue on in the interview process.

SI Leader Application

To apply for an SI Leader position at Atlanta Campus, complete the application above, indicating Atlanta as the campus for which you're applying, and submit it in person to the Office of Supplemental Instruction located in 249 Sparks Hall or via e-mail to supplementalinstruct@gsu.edu.

To apply for an SI Leader position on any of the Perimeter College campuses, complete the application above, indicating your Perimeter campus of choice as the campus for which you're applying, and submit it in person to the Supplemental Instruction Coordinator for Perimeter College, Justin Swisher, at CL2310 (found in the library building on the Clarkston campus) or via email to jswisher@gsu.edu.
